Range recepticle question ( stick house, not RV)

We have a rental apt. that has been empty for awhile. We picked up a used electric range ( don't know if it works or not) and I plugged it in, the indicator lights on the range work when you turn on the burners and/or the oven, but nothing gets hot. I checked the receptacle based on what I saw on a web site. I get 120v between each of the hot legs and neutral . I checked between the 2 hot legs , the website says I should see 240v... I get nothing....I am using a digital meter ( it reads -0 across the 2 hot leads ). Any advise on what to look for next ? Just trying to determine if its the power supply at the receptacle or the stove . Thanks

  • If you are getting 120V from EACH hot leg to neutral, then you do not have a tripped breaker.
The only way to get zero between the two hots is for "someone" to have changed the wiring, either back at the panel or in the receptacle itself.
You need to trace it back to ensure you do in fact have two separate hot feeds, one from each half of the 240V service to the house.

Sounds like the receptacle is not wired correctly. :)

Agreed. Sounds like somebody wired the two hots to one 120 volt leg. I wouldn't be surprised that the controls and the clock would only use one of the 120 volt legs, but the burners won't work.

Edit: missed your post. Check for one tripped breaker. Might have to cycle both of them if they are ganged.

Hasn't been touched in years and used to work, so the wiring at the receptacle should not be an issue
  • Check the breaker box to see if both legs of the range breaker are thrown. Turn breaker completely off, then on again. Good luck!
