RoyB.....Nice set up. That clamp on meter is the way to go. 
If I used two, would I simple clamp one on the + lead from the panels and the other on the + lead of the controller? I would imag8ine they still need 12V to light them up?
Here is a test I just did on my set up. Using a 6A battery charger as the supply.

This reads voltage fine, but nothing registers in amps. The battery is totally charged (13.6v). I connected an 8amp load to the batteries to see if this would register anything.....nothing.
Some day I'll understand all this stuff.... :-)
