Rear View Camera

We have a rearview camera that was installed after market on our motorhome by the previous owner. It is one that has a reverse image. When it was wired in a hole was drilled through the back and the wiring was brought to a nearby closet. At that point there is a 6 pin connector that connects to the wiring that goes to the front to a small Radio Shack TV monitor. Recently the camera quit working. We took it to a local RV Dealer/Repair Service. They checked it out for $160 and said the camera was fine and the monitor was the problem. They would replace it all for only $1500. Needless to say my husband brought it home disgusted. We found the same monitor and replaced it. Only to find it is the camera.

Now my question does anyone have an idea where to find a camera with this type of connection? So far we have only found RCA type connectors.

  • The six pin connector is called a "DIN" connector
But what you need is an adapter and breakout cable, to connect a new camera
I think RVcams.com can help you if you call them

Wireless or Wired, either or, $160.00 to have it checked out & $1500 to replace ???? And afterwards to find out that it was the camera. I hope they were reimbursed in part / all for an incorrect diagnosis.
  • I have a Rear View Safety wireless and in general wouldn't recommend it. I finally got it to work, but only after extending the camera and monitor antennas so that they have a line of sight view of each other about 10 feet apart. Even then the frame rate is slow and causes the video to be jerky.

This may be a stupid question, but why not replace the entire set-up with a wireless monitor / camera for under $200 ?

Generally the wired cameras have better picture quality. I have a Hopkins wired system that was $120.00

A wireless back-up camera is normally connected to a vehicles back up lights via the transmitter & turns off & on via that type of connection. If the transmitter power lead is connected to a 12 volt power supply that is on, when the ignition is on, the camera should work just fine for your needs. The monitor simply connects to a 12 volt receptacle on your dash.
  • Here is another thread on the subject that might give you some information. Good luck!
