If you have a rear window and a clear view from the inside, you might want to try (or additionally use) a passive photonic wireless system, i.e. one of the reducing Fresnel lens decals. They generally work quite well during the day, although judging distances is hard. At night it's not possible to see enough context to reasonably tell where a vehicle is in relation to you (whether in your lane or another one, for instance). Despite the limitations, though, they do offer a good bit utility for not a lot of cash.
