I have not figured out why, but after a recharge the water takes a couple of days before it reaches full softness. I have flushed the unit for from 10 minutes to 20 minutes and it makes no difference.
I have tried Old biscuits method of rechraginging and the salt kept clumping and was a real pain.
I now empty the water - six cups from the unit. I have a 28 oz (3 cup) container that I put 1/2 of the salt into and add water to the top. I stir that with a spatula before and during the time I pour the slurry into the softener. Repeat with the rest of the slurry. Screw the top back on and tip the unit back and forth and roll it to distribute the brine.
I let it sit for a couple of hours to overnight (doesn't seem to make any difference) and then flush.
