Ed, Good to see you in here!
I think there's a progression in what's essential in a meter for RVers:
1. DVOM (absolutely essential)
2. AC Amps
3. Capacitance
4. DC Amps
5. Temperature
6. Frequency
I have only the first 3, and haven't actually had a situation where I needed the rest. Those 3 will allow troubleshooting of compressor-driven appliances. Just for convenience, it'd be nice to have all the capability in one meter.
Item 1 can be a cheap/free shirt pocket DVOM from Harbor Freight. I strive to have one wherever I am, whatever I'm driving. My AC Clamp-On Ammeter is also HF, but I don't see good reviews on their DVOM that includes Capacitance and Frequency for around $30. And it's still not a Ammeter, certainly not DC Amps.
