refer cooling fan

What is involved in installing a cooling fan in a propane refer and does it help? If it helps, how do you do it?
  • How you do it depends on where you want to put the fan: inside the fridge or outside.

I put one outside on our last trailer. I just mounted a weather proof fan next to the OEM and wired it to the OEM fan. On our present trailer I put two fans inside mounted to the cooling fins, and added a thermostat to control when the fans will run.

They are basically 12 V computer fans: 120 mm. I try to use ones that are water resistant.
  • Our trailer came with a fan in the rear top of the fridge. I added one in the rear bottom and just tapped into the 12v. I also run a small fan inside the fridge on the bottom shelf. It runs forever on 2 D cells. It helps circulate the cold when the fridge is loaded down.

There is a company that makes a fan/light assembly that goes INSIDE. I tapped into the fridge light circuit to power it... Worked very well and greatly reduced icing of the fins.

Fans outside also seemed to help (Tapped into the other end of the same wire) but when the cooling unit failed the technician showed me where crud was blown up against the heat exchanger... NOW IF I were still RVing... I'd now know how to clean that crud out (Blow air DOWN, carefully, fan off cover off) but alas I'm no longer RVing.
  • I looked at one of the fan assemblies for inside the fridge but my gosh they wanted $60-$70 for them, when you can make your own for about $20, including the thermostat.

When we had an absorption refrig, I put a fan inside the refrigerator and one outside in the tubing/vent area. They really helped. I used computer fans \
