Thanks for sharing this RVUSA!
I think it is very interesting because as a young boy I used to zap ants with my magnifying glass all the time!!! As an added plus I now own a 2013 C-Max Energi and 7.85kW of SunPower solar panels on the roof of my house :)
I think that any amount of off-grid charging is very interesting. Even a tiny amount of "free" solar charge say, while I'm at the supermarket, would be appreciated. Of course that's assuming the cost of the solar panels is zero (which we all know it wouldn't be).
I realize that we're a long way from the day when I will be able to quickly & fully charge my electric car from the solar panel(s) on its tiny roof, but I am glad to see that Ford & SunPower are thinking creatively about how a system like this might work in the future.
As far as the car moving itself under the fresnel array; My C-Max already has the ability to park itself, so it stands to reason that it could easily navigate its way through the space under the lens.
My solar installation and the car weren't cheap… but today I no longer have an electric bill and I seldom purchase gasoline for the car (my Dodge truck is another story altogether). In another 7 years or so the investment in solar will have paid for itself and like the fact that my family's daily driver is primarily powered by the sun.
Cheers,
-Mark
