Bought a used MH in early January. Bought GS RV insurance next day. Still waiting for title before bringing coach home (50 miles away) but instead of storing at house zip (as shown on insurance), found a covered storage yard with high fence, 12 cameras, lights, live in manager for a decent monthly price. Dutifully called Nat. General to report the garaging change in Zip even before it is actually brought there. Was told change will result in increase of $191 to policy. My home is in an area with few street lights and a fair share of theft, vandalism. The storage shed - 10 miles away - has never had any thefts due to the security measures described above. So it costs $191 more??? Looking for new insurance quotes. No success yet but had a laugh with guy at Progressive who asked if the 12 year old motorhome had the "Z" package. Told him I had no clue. Asked him what that was. He had no clue either. Hung up on him after he demanded to know exactly how many days I would use the RV and how many it would be in storage. And so it goes.

It might not be the zip so much as the fact that it won't be in your immediate care/custody that's getting you the higher rate.Maybe according to their actuarial tables there are more losses/claims associated with offsite storage.

That is exactly what my insurance agent told me.

That storage might have a good track record but it is only a small portion of that zip code which could have a high incident rate.Vice versa...your neighborhood could have a high incident but overall zip code is low.Immediate care vs off site.You have blue hair vs red......who knows what factors are used in assigning rates :B

Your responses make sense but hate to be charged because the insurance gurus like to lump large areas together. Guess that's the way it is but our neighborhood has covenants that frown on large mobile objects blocking their view of the cattle across the road plus our small cul-de-sac would be a hard place to hide it. And so it goes - probably will try a more local insurance carrier that knows the area better. Nothing to lose.

So you're saying on your insurance information you have to provide the address you live AND the address you store your RV? And the other insurance company wanted to know how many days "on the road" you'd be vs how many days in storage? Maybe it's different where you live, but I've never heard of that before. "How many miles do you drive to work?" Yes. Don't know who you have your normal automobile insurance with, but why not check with them? And then there's always AllState! I've been with AllState for over 35 years, and we've moved around a lot in our early years. AllState always had the best prices for us, for all our vehicles, renters, home owners, and RV's, even life insurance, fraud protection, road side assistance. We've NEVER been asked where the camper is stored when not in use.

Problem solved and kudos to National General Insurance and one of their customer relations reps, Shane. He read my post and sent me a PM asking for details which I provided. It was less than an hour and one of his specialists called me and told me that an error had been made. It seems that garaging an RV within 100 miles of the owners residence is no additional charge. The rules for garaging of cars is different than for RVs. Hence, no extra charge for putting the RV in a covered, fenced, surveilled, lighted storage with a live in manager only 10 miles away and there were be no increase in premium. Makes me happy and I am glad that I took the time to post on the subject. Guess I can stop looking for a new company for now and I am happy to see that this one actually reads our posts. Attaboy to NatGen.

I will say this. With our Allied insurance they didn't change the rate on us when we moved the TT we had from our home to storage at ocean lakes in myrtle beach, sc. Which is 4 hrs away from our home. Might wanna look at them. When we traded I n for our class c, GS initially quoted us through national general and then I had them quote us through Allied. Allied was about half the price. Just saying.

Same here, they want to know where it is stored.

The probable issue is that it is out of your custody although zip codes do matter.

Yeah...our FT Ins even had that question "Address where garaged?"
