I have the same basic issue and I would guess that smketter is probably the closest to the answer. We dont need to break the 12 volt side with relays etc, all we want to do is remotely operate the on off switch. Breaking the 12 volt side would let my converter power off but I would still have to bend down and turn it back on every time.
My inverter is under the kitchen cabinet so it's close to the battery box. It has a soft touch type switch on the front panel.If we forget to turn it on we have to get out of bed and go turn the inverter on so the tv works. I know, I know it is torture but that's what we have to do.
I haven't researched and I dont see a port on my xantrex 600 to add a remote switch.
My concern is that if I open it up I will find that the membrane type switch is part of a circuit board. Maybe the op has a rocker switch which is a manual switch and would be pretty easy to do.
Op if you can add a switch to turn it on and off it wont use any more power. It will save power by not being on all night.

I removed mine so I could see the end of it and it does have a port.
