Anyone who sweats how many watts the relay coil of a Bosch Tyco relay pulls really needs to go back to lantern and bucket level living. When the load is switched OFF the relay coils, yeah all three of them are off. If you want to, go STANDBY your battery monitor and verify this. The OTHER way is to get a pair of T rated 3-way switches, then run a traveler between the two. C'mon people, this ain't rocket science.
I agree, but the OP was very adamant about it.
I do not want a solid state relay. They are great for some applications, but my 12v system has seen many spikes and I'm more comfortable with a mechanical relay. I've spent too much time tracking down replacement MOSFETs, IGBTs and the like to repair them.
As for the three normal relay solution posted, that requires continuously powering at least one of the relays. I considered that solution, and I've even got all the relays I'd need in my parts box. I could even use a single relay instead of three and change the switch controls if I was willing to go with a constant normal relay on solution.
I was thinking about something like this which is available for $20 except it seems to be a latch-on and reset to off type design. I'd prefer a latch-on latch-off pulse control ratchet-type relay.
