The ON pulse allows the first two relays to pick and hold. The next (OFF) pulse causes them to drop out. NO more current draw. You're not going to get much simpler than that.
You're right, I wasn't clear. They are off when the pump is off, but I'd rather not continuously power the relays when the pump is on. The normal condition will be pump on during the day, and I'd rather not have to buy relays rated for continuous duty.
Ratchet relays aren't common, but they are extremely simple in design. The solenoid pulls down the ratchet, which holds the contacts closed. The next pulse pulls the ratchet again and the contacts spring open. That's much simpler than the three relay design or the solid state options. They also make sequencing versions of that type of relay that steps through multiple contacts during each ratchet operation.
I've found a couple of available relays that meet my reqts., but so far the only ones I've seen are from specialty suppliers and they want an arm/leg. I've found some latch on/latch off designs for cheaper, but they need different switching control to power the two separate coils for on/off. I may go with the Intellitec or just rewind my own if I can't find what I'm really looking for.
I do appreciate the comments and information so far.
