I would not recommend melting the lead on the battery. You can melt other lead and poor it on the battery with minimum risk. The preferred method is the drill and tap the terminal for a stud to screw into. If you try screwing a bolt into the lead it will pull the threads out. This is often used to fix the batteries on Golf Carts.
