Repair on steering gear box

Most have you have either helped or read about the saga of "where did this come from".
http://forums.woodalls.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/26925511.cfm

Now that that mystery is solved I was hoping one of you will know what to do next regarding the repair. If it's not to hard I've offered the MH owners that I would try and repair it for them.

Will an easy out take the broken piece out on that type of bolt and without having to take the gear box out? And then just insert a new bolt?

OR

Are we looking at something being drastically wrong with the steering that 'made' the bolts break?

Note one of the other bolts is missing the washer.

Thanks,
Rock

  • My old '95 Bounder had steering box issues. The only way to solve them was to send it to a major rebuilder in Phx and write a check for over $500. Solved it pronto. Looked first into rebuilding the box myself, but its just too involved for a guy who hasn't done it before. Trust me.
  • What chassis is this? It would be nice to let us know without having to go to another web page just to see if it might apply!
  • I would inspect the steering box to remove the broken bolt as needed. May need to remove the box. All new bolts to reattach. If there is any warranty you may as well just take it in. Might be best to just go into the shop either way.
  • look and see if the end of the broken bolt is sticking out..if it is see if you can thread it out that way if not you will have to pull the box from the frame to remove it.. should be simple enough if you have a long half inch breaker bar and a torque wrench... and replace the other bolts while your there have a feeling they are not far behind..
  • You would need to remove the steering gear box to check for any broken off bolts.
The bolts probably got loose over time, causing them to break.Or, someone must have worked on the steering and left the washer off.

Make sure you go back with the OEM bolts and washers.
