Usually you should be able to take all the screws out and simply push the plastic off to one side. Maybe twist is some. Once its out of the way, you will probably find that the wires have been ripped apart. Now might be a great time to pull all new wire. Something of a heavier gage to carry more amps. If you do cut a hole, a piece of light gage sheet aluminum screwed over the hole should work just fine.
