The 1157 is a dual element and offset nubs on the base and puts out 400ish lumens on the higher power element.
The 1156 is a single element with symetric nubs on the base and puts our 400ish lumens.
I used these to replace the 1156's in my coach and couldn't be happier. Brighter and less heat. Very easy to read under.
