replacing spring in RV awning

Replaced my spring with a used spring a friend gave me but it seems to be binding up. My awning is a fiesta by Carefree and I do not know the brand of the replaced spring. It sled into my tube just fine but when I went to pull it out it just wanted to stretch the spring. I left it in and added the turns to both ends and put on the braces then attempted rewinding the awning but nothing happens and I released the lock and it seems to engage but that's all.

The used spring did not seem to wind properly as the other, it felt tight with only a few turns. I reversed the tension and added 12 turns with awning down. Unless someone has a better idea I will probably let off tension on both sides, rewind by hand and then add 8 turns on each end, and try that.

  • Can't tell you how to adjust your awning, but have different suggestion. IF you don't want to continue fighting, try the crank conversion. I had one put on my awning and it was worth it, as I don't fight the spring anymore. Not sure who I bought from, but it was someone from Central Florida at the Good Sam Rally in Atlanta.
