Replacing the Male End of the RV Power Cord

buy a plug end at home delot 15 bucks and are built alot better

Do you have a 30AMP or 50AMP cord?

30AMP splice a 25' to it. I did that many years ago.
50AMP just replace the end. Too much weight to mess with if extra length not needed

I used the Camco when I did mine.. not once but twice (Ok so it's been a long time)

The first "Replacement" was not due to failure.. I needed a short 50 amp Pigtail and could not find one so I cut a couple feet off the shore cord and applied a Camco power Pull plug.. I never sealed it because it's under the "Rain hood" of the park's power box in use.. Now it's exposed but again the opening is DOWN do when 12 years later there was a problem.. I opened the thing up (With a new plug sitting besiding it) and found not evidence of water damage.

(What happned is one of the wires came out of the clamp. Appears I'd not tightened it enough) put the new plug on and clamped it down well.. Using it today. ... I take that back.. Used it yesterday.. Today I'm on a 30 amp site so i'm using my 30 amp cord and plug. 30 amps on a 50 amp rig means only one A/C.. In August.. and I am comfortale... Strange weather we are having.

Get the Camco connector with the handle.
Buy some electrical grease at the same time. Coat the wire and terminals with a liberal amount.
The hard plastic or bakelite connectors from Lowes or Home Depot are not the best in the world. Yes, they are cheap!

Thanks for the quick response. I have 30amp and it self stores by pushing it back into the camper through that cubby hole so hopefully the camco with handle fits.

Don't try to make it weather tight, all that's going to do is trap moisture inside and speed up corrosion.

If you want to protect the studs / screws inside the housing, paint them with battery terminal protection paint, or apply vaseline or another grease after making the connections.

funny the ones i have used for years on hundreds of trailers i have yet to have a customer call back saying they are "junk"

Replaced the male connector on mind 2 years ago with a Camco 50 amp connector and all is fine. Also, don't buy at Camping World - they are cheaper elsewhere such as Amazon, Ebay, etc. And, yes you want one with a handle.

I've installed them all, and the only one I recommend is the Progressive Industries TT30P- uses a captive type lug for hooking up the wire- all of the others just have a screw that you have to try to get all of the wires under. It also has a true round ground, much easier to deal with than the U grounds of the others. Made in the US, as well.



There is another good one out there, but I don't remember the brand.
