YOu say devices that work off a REMOTE do not work.. This means they are controlled by a battery operated radio transmitter (is the battery any good) and a 12 volt operated Radio Receiver.
You blew fuses.. but you know what blows faster than a fuse? The power supply transistors and diodes in the remote receiver. There are two ways to protect them from reverse polarity, The way I'd do it, and the way many companies do it.
The way I'd do it, there is no damage if you hook up backwards.
