Agreed, a diode across the output is needed to save the electronics in case of a reverse polarity situation. Are these diodes actually installed in converters? I'm guessing not. There isn't a diode shown in the schematic posted earlier.
I think the fuses are mislabeled. They may or may not save the converter in the event of reverse polarity. The main job is to prevent fires from starting in the converter. Should the output capacitors short, the battery would supply a huge current into the short. The fuse is there to prevent further damage.
