My Kisae has 20A GFCI outlets. I run an extension cord from it to my 120VAC Transfer Relay and tie in the AC ground there. Sounds like what what you're doing, or close enough. The Inverter case is grounded to the frame.
No problems with downstream GFCI outlets or the Inverter's GFCI outlet.
What inverter is it? COuld the Inverter's GFCI outlet be defective?
