Roof A/C

I bought a double nice 87 Fleetwood Bounder.Only 29k on it.I don't know nuttin about these types of units. The front one works perfect. The rear unit blows air but not cold.

Before I start on it....I would like to hear about where to start...things to check an such.

When you say one works and not the other is that with both turned on at the same time or independently?

You probably have a 30amp service that will only run one at a time. The units go into what is called shedding, basically one compressor turns on the shuts off, then other one turns on.

First check the unit that is not working by itself. If still not cold, remove the shroud on the roof and give it a good cleaning. That would be where I would start...

    Good luck

this would be my first guess. as I recall some dual AC units of that vintage had a switch to manually switch between AC units.

  • 87 bounder is definitely a 30 amp service. Probably has a emerald 1 plus generator on it which is a 4000 watt generator. Still enough to run two a/c's. being an 87, you could throw parts at it or find your one on ebay or craigslist for couple hundred and just change it. take you about 2 hours if never done. Very simple.

Does this coach have a 30-amp shore tie cable, or a 50-amp?
What does this coach have as a Generator, and is it working? I recently saw a Class A that was 30A shore tie service with a 5500-Watt generator. The second A/C would run only off of the generator.

The Coleman Mach A/C will have at least two Capacitors. One for Fan Run, the second for Compressor Run. Each has to be good for that part to run. Chances are, there is also a Start Capacitor and Start Relay for the Compressor. You could try substituting the capacitors from the running A/C into the other one and see if the situation changes.

Capacitor failures are relatively common, fortunately more common than compressor failures, or even refrigerant leaks.
  • what kind of a/c is it? probably a coleman mach 1 would be my guess. If it comes on and doesnt cool it could be out of refrigerant which means probably you have to replace a/c. There is a little relay box under the shroud that could be bad and they are replaceable. Also the compressor could be bad on it. The control board could be bad under the cover inside the R/V. I would start by pulling the top cover off and seeing if power is getting to the compressor. Shouldnt be over about 11 amps if it is getting power
