Pop the caps off the starting battery so you can see inside with a flashlight. Battery must be filled correctly. No exposed plates.
Jumper start engine and let it run for a few minutes.
Visually check all the cells with a flashlight. If any are boiling vigorously then the vehicle is unsafe to drive. Find a way to get a battery.
Most starting batteries fail high resistance. If a cell is shorted the electrolyte will boil. To ease your worries take a rest stop and run your hand over the outside of the battery. No way to swap a house battery temporarily a d slip a sock over the flopping positive terminal?
