If you put the pad ON the gravel, allow them to rock, or use them on soft ground...they will crack. Two inches of concrete makes a terrible bridge.
However, two iches of concrete set on solid earth should not crack because it can not settle downward. Having a solid base is the trick.
The average driveway is framed with 2x4, that only leaves for 3 1/2 of substance. Most contractors add a base of gravel AFTER the forms have been set. What does this mean? Your guy might have told you they put in a 4" concrete driveway, but chances are it is more like 2 1/2- 3".
