- Cloud_DancerExplorer IIThe extra cost of replacing the cooling unit with the one which uses helium instead of hydrogen makes sense (scientifically). Therefore, I believe that's what I'll do,....on my RIM1200 NORCOLD.

Oh man, the RATIO between RV gas refrigerator FIRES and Freon AC fires is like ten thousand to one. Since I went to AC everything but the MANUAL CONTROL hot water heater, I have NOT HAD A SINGLE appliance problem in FIFTEEN years. And the rig is used YEAR ROUND. Can any of you "smart-board" propane fellows claim that?
No argument with regard to compressor fridges vs. evaporative units. (I use a 12/24V DC compressor fridge.) They're far more efficient, consistent in temperature, and simpler to operate. However, I suspect most of the people here, and most of the people who own trailers that aren't here but who have evaporative cooling units could say the same thing you just said. Most people's fridges don't catch on fire.
Unfortunately, there don't seem to be good data available for a good statistical analysis. An anecdote is not data, and the plural of anecdote isn't data either. - bfast54Explorer

Yes, I have seen that type fire, BUT NOBODY on this forum knows what caused it. It may have been a failed cooling unit. But, the odds are it may have been an LP leak at the refer. It could have been a insect/animal nest at the burner area that caught fire. If the burner flue is not clean, the flame can billow out at the burner area and catch something on fire. Doug
WRONG ANSWER ----I have PERSONALLY spoken with owners whose rigs were either slightly damaged---or DESTROYED by fridge FAILURES -----NOT GAS LEAK caused.
I also have been to the VERY EXPERENCIED AMISH tech - owner at the Ref. Repair place in Shipshawana ..National Refridgeration. I am pretty sure is the name ......Anyway.....he has seen numerous cases of Fires caused by FAILURE of the cooling unit.
Feel free to look up his shop...and call him if you dont believe it is a fact this happens. - MEXICOWANDERERExplorerOh man, the RATIO between RV gas refrigerator FIRES and Freon AC fires is like ten thousand to one. Here we go again!!! Everybody on the forum knows exactly where these fires are caused.
Not true.. Go read the various threads I have provided and decide.
I agree that some of the fires have been caused by mechanical failure but there is way more to the story.

It is true. You have no reason to say not true based on what you provided. What you provided are possible causes just as a ruptured cooling unit is a possible cause. What you provided is good and most definitely has merit. - Ranger_SmithExplorer

It is because it is a **** refrigerator and it had a failed cooling unit. A billowing flame won't cause that damage. - The_TexanExplorer

Here we go again!!! Everybody on the forum knows exactly where these fires are caused. It is hard to believe you keep trying to defend that refrigerator junk. These things have caused more loss of property, personal belongings, vacation days, and in some cases pets, not to mention entire RVs. No wonder every one is facing higher insurance rates as discussed in threads on these forums. It is a miracle that there has been no loss of human life in one of these hydrogen debacles. The cooling process has been used for years and years very successfully . There is nothing wrong with the vapor absorption process. The problem is in the poor quality of the material in these cooling units the manufacturers of these junkers are using.
Sorry, but there has been documented loss of human life due to RV fridge fires. - bigfootfordNomad II

Some of you will be surprised!
