Sewer \ Waste pipe repair

I hope I'm posting this in the right section, and couldn't find a previous post.....

I need to repair the waste pipe on my RV. It cracked right against the last in line "T or Y" fitting, between it and the discharge cap. In order to repair it, it looks like I will need to replace the 45 deg off the gray blade valve, the "T" on the 3" main. This means adding to the pipe before the damage so everything will line up. If there was a way of clamping to the OD of the 3" fitting, all I would have to do is repair a few inches of pipe. Has anyone done this? will a 4" x 3" fernco fit that? I know I would need to support it going this route, but I would much rather a simple repair here.

  • You should not need anything over the pipe, just use ABS cement to weld the crack. Thanks to the previous owner, my grey pipe was cracked almost all the way around and I "welded" it with ABS cement. Eight years later it is still as good as new and you can harly even see the weld. The cement will soften the ABS and weld it together. The fumes ARE toxic so have a well ventilated area to work.
  • There is no space for adding a coupling over pipe (just over the last coupling), and the crack is u shaped from the coupling outward.
  • Can you post a picture of what you think you need to fix?

If you have a flat area of the pipe that needs repair you might find a coupler with the ID the same as the OD of the piece needing repair. Cut the coupler in half (end to end) and make a clam shell that will fit over the pipe needing repair. Glue and clamp this over the broken area. This may reduce some dis-assembly and might help save other fittings.

Cut in the direction of the shinny lines on this coupler then glue & clamp it around the bad section of pipe.
  • Why not just repair the crack with ABS cement or Plasti-Mend which is an ABS cement.
  • Yes, one of these would be an option. Remember it is slightly different then some residential ones. Measure your pipes outside diameter.

I would try to work around using the coupling and use glued fittings. This will make it a little more rigid.
The valve assemblies should be readily avaiable at many RV supply houses.

  • I used a femco fitting to adapt my marine macerator pump to my RV fittings.
