size of inverter

I just purchased this 300W morningstar inverter
morningstar

But I didn't realize how incredibly big and bulky and heavy it is. I'll only use the inverter to charge my computer and cameras and cell phone when off the grid from my 12v deep cycle.

I'm wondering if I need such a big inverter and if I can't just get away with a much smaller and cheaper one for my intended use?

Thx

  • What led you to choose this inverter?

Is radio shack a sine wave? Any apple products? Because I hear Apple really needs sine wave.

Hardwired into your electric system everyone is going to love plugging into any wall outlet. Sine wave power at the touch of the remote button.

The MS 300w is perfect for what you need.

    It's not overkill?

My brothers 150 w inverter he got from radio shack that's about the size of a small portable hard drive and about 1/50th the weight is able to charge my computer and cameras. Perhaps not all at the same time, but I don't need that.

    It smells like a 65' XKE ?
    Yuuuch...
  • Toss my vote in with the "Keepers". The Moningstar will be yawning when cheap inverters are headed back to the USA in their third reincarnation. Your power brick will run cooler and there isn't anyone running around on this planet thatvcan convince me an alternating current device won't live longer with pure sine wave. Cheap inverters are FLAKY voltage and waveform wise. First blown laptop brick was brought to me yesterday by Panchito from a rural rancho. Tomorrow morning I am going to make up a pure D.C. booster. 12.0 volts to 19.5. The brick smells like the inside of a British car fuse box.
  • That is an excellent inverter. I'd keep it, especially since your intended use is rather expensive electronic equipment. If you were just going to run a fan or light bulb it might be different.

I would keep the 300WATT PURE SINE WAVE model. this will also be big enough to run your HOME ENTERTAINMENT items like the HDTV and the DVD player. Glad to see you have the PURE SINE MODEL...

I went with the 150WATT MODEL and found out how nice it was to have so went to the 300watt model later and final went to a 600WATT PSW model. This is something you keep finding a use for haha...

If you only need to use the inverter for 150WATTS it won't draw any more power than 150WATTS even though you have the 600WATT model Inverter... My 300WATT model would just barely run my 120VAC coffee grinder. It was hit or miss getting it grind my coffee beans without tripping off. That was the last straw for me haha. Changed to the bigger unit.

  • You get what you pay for... This is a nice PSW inverter. Your PC can draw 100-150W between charging and use at the same time. Personaly I'd keep it.
  • I depends , what do you intend to run on it. also how much battery power (or way to recharge the battery/ ies)
If you intend to run heavy use items such as the A/C, microwave , water heater etc. you will need a really big one with a large bank of batteries too.
If you are just going to run small items then a small one will work. Remember the more wattage an inverter puts out is that much drain on the battery too. If I remember roughly 20-30%
