Op back again...well looking into this further it really seems to me that the only thing that can cause this problem is a defective motor. The failure to retract has happened a number of times since posting and the resolution is the same, just rotate the motor shaft a few degrees in any direction and off it goes.
Looking at all the documentation from the Lipert website they want you to take out/replace the whole assembly not just the motor.
So, has anyone had experience in just replacing the motor? A cursory look shows that the motor is held in place only by its attachment point to the slideout lead screw. Sort of like the motor assembly that moves the front jacks.
Any help would be appreciated.
