Small engine question

Since you guys know tons of stuff I figured perhaps a question about my Echo blower would be something you guys would know. It is a 2 cycle engine and I can get it started, but it acts like it is starving for fuel. It will run slowly, but if you try to give it more throttle, it will stall out. The other thing that is odd is that the bulb you use to prime the carb will let you press it, but it doesn't come back out easily like it used to. Could it be a fuel filter that needs replacement? It seems like those are often the culprit...
  • I deal with gummed up small engines all the time. Helpful little tool is a simple water bottle as a temp fuel tank. Drill a small hole in the cap and push in an appropriate size fuel line.

That way youre positive the carb is getting fresh clean gas. Helps to troubleshoot.

Another tip is ditch the stabil and by the StarTron Blue Enzyme. Its really good for our ethanol gas. You can even use it to clean out carbs that are not easy to take apart. Say like the Onan gennys we have.

Make yourself a temp water bottle gas tank. Mix up a very very strong mixture of blue enzyme and gravity feed into the carb. If you have a fuel drain screw like the Onan genny open it to allow old gas out and new gas in.

Start the motor if you can. Run it for awhile. Then let that very very strong mixture of carb cleaner sit in the carb. Keep doing that until the motor runs smooth and then stop with the overly aggressive mixture of blue enzyme.

Could always check the spark plug. Clean or replace as needed.

The fuel might not be the freshest, but it was pure gas and double stabil treated. Do you think it is more likely a fuel age issue than a filter issue?

Could be both. You'll know when you fish the filter out. If it's gummy looking, it's the fuel.

Little hint, don't use red Stabil, use the marine blue Stabil. Mich, much better and it don't stink either. I use it winter and summer, in every gas can full and I've never had any issue.

Your carb is probably a Walbro. You can get one on Amazon or Flea-Bay. If the filter is gummed up, just replace the carb. You don't want to take one apart. Chances are it won't go back together.
  • I,ve popped a lot of those filters out of chain saws ,lot of times I find the rubber hose ate up by fuel filters are mostly still in good shape.

  • 99.99% sure the fuel went bad and gummed up the works.

Only buy pure gas for you small engines.
  • PB-500T I think. I somewhat recall using a folded metal wire to pull the filter out of the tank. Tank is full right now though...
  • Lots of you tube videos on the subject probably. Good source. That's what I used for my Husqvarna.
