I plan on using Costco batteries as they're right down the street. I do plan on using the temperature compensater.

That will work well. I charge 2 x 6V Energizers with the solar set at 13.6V float w/temp comp. I'm in MN so the Winter and Summer float voltage swings by .5V or so.
