Solar Automatic Storage Water Heater

I have a solar automatic storage water heater with both 24 and 120 volt circulating pumps.

I'm trying to figure out how it works. My main question is the optimal setting of the electric heater.

And it seems the 120 volt pump never runs. It has a thermostat and is on the house water. The 24 volt pumps runs frequently and is on the solar side.

  • The 120v is a back-up for a very bad solar week. In order to conserve electricity and therefore $$$, I would suspect the 120v t-stat is set to someone's guess at the absolute minimum temp for the desired purpose of the hot water. As long as solar is doing its job and keeping the temp above that minimum, all is well.
