Solar Battery Tender plus 390W panels

Getting ready to connect up my 390W worth of panels this weekend.
They're installed and just need a bit of interior wiring to finish.

The trailer already has a little (~10"x18") solar battery tender type panel on the roof that I have left connected. But yesterday it was cold and sunny. The batteries had been fully charged with shore power and disconnected from all loads (I think, the trailer came with the switch wired in and the wiring has been difficult to trace).

I measure the voltage at the battery, and it was over 15V! Not exactly float voltage. So if I want the batts to ever rest at float voltage using my new MPPT controller, it looks like I'll have to disconnect that little solar panel.

Does that 15V make sense? I guess those little panels have no controller built in?

Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything before I try to find the wires.

  • Ok, thanks folks. I found a a wire going direct to the battery behind the off/on switch with 5a fuse. Pulled the fuse and the battery voltage started dropping, eventually tapering off. That must be the lead from the mini-solar.

    All is good now.

    Ya.
  • It's likely your small existing panel has no charge controller. Even though that' not a great way to do it with a small panel and a large battery you can usually get by.
15v would be expected with it wired that way. However, it's not desirable unless the batteries are fairly cold.
If you're connecting 390 watts I would just unhook the small panel. Or, you could get a small inexpensive PWM controller, like a Morningstar SunSaver, and use that to regulate the small panel.
