I have seen REVERSE DIODEs mounted on some of those to keep the solar panels array from draining the batteries when the high sun goes down...
Not sure if that was your problem or not. Yours may be an electrical misswiring thing or two much drain from your loads after the high sun went down....
You solar power have to be large enough to put more DC Current into your batteries then you pull out between charging sessions...
Need more info to determine this...
