As long as there has been trade, there have been trade wars. Got to admit shooting tariffs and taxes, while they can cause real pain, is still a lot better than bullets and bombs. Time will tell if these tariffs jump start the US companies, or just increase the prices of the imported products to the consumer.
Politicians, governments and others have been choosing economic winners and losers since the beginning of civilization. The justification of those decisions don't always mate up with the reality of the outcome. Don't you think that Unicorns felt they were getting the short end of the stick when Noah decided the last seat on the Ark went to the fire ant? Bad as it turned out, I am sure that Noah had a good argument why that was a good decision at the time.
