I used a short piece of SOFT copper pipe pounded flat on the toad hitch. Has worked well for 4 years. Just don't pound too much as the copper will work harden and get brittle. It can be softened up again with a Burns-O-Matic type torch, or just don't pound so long.
ANNEAL
Heat with torch then plunge into cold water. Do it twice. Will revert Cu to very soft.
FORGE
Reheat. Then lay piece of stout flat steel atop the tubing. Pound the snot out of it. The flat steel keeps the copper looking good. Leave one end -slightly- open the other end tighter than a duck's butt in a high swell. Turn on end, sealed end down. Fill with 100% lead plus flux. Drill holes for fasteners. Then "tin" the entire exterior surface with 60/40 solder that melts at a much lower temperature than pure lead.
