Solar Power Questions for a National RV

In the course of replacing the four house batteries I discovered the carrier was too corroded and rusty to trust to carry the weight. Currently awaiting a new one to be built and welded in place. I also disconnected my chassis batteries. I noticed the battery disconnect light stayed illuminated. Thinking I had missed a wire, I checked to ensure I had not. Not a connection to a battery any where.
I went in the motorhome last night after dark and no light illuminated on the panel. Thinking I have feed back from the solar panels I pulled the panel and put a voltmeter to the light connections. I have a reading of 17 to 18 volts going to this panel. I found a five amp fuse in line on the chassis distribution panel which I pulled. Still have voltage.
I have no solar power controller that I can find. Never was concerned about the solar panels until now. This is on a 01 National RV Caribbean that I bought new. Don't see many of them but it is basically a smaller version (35ft) of the Tradewinds by National. Hopefully some one can explain why the rocker switch panel has solar power to it and if there is a controller located somewhere and is 17 volts too much power feeding it. If so, where do I shut it off and will this present problems once all my batts are back in service. I might add that this is a Spartan chassis. Long post but want to tell everything I can to help. Thanks.

PI have solar power feeding to rocker switches by the entry door but cannot find any solar power on any wire in the battery compartment. Is this normal? Could it power through the Freedom inverter?

Check the voltage on the inverter then. With batteries removed and shore power off. If you find the same 17V there, then this is what you have.
  • Larry Curly & Moe engineering almost guarantees X quantity of leakage from chassis battery to house batteries and vice-versa. More pronounced is the effects of a couple of Farads of electrolytic capacitors used in boom-boom unmusic machines.
  • anything is possible, BUT is NOT likely
never seen it done that way
are you sure the switch is not directly connected to the solar
and is the disconnect for the solar

    assuming the batteries are removed
how and where are you testing for the voltage in the battery compartment
  • Panels are small, each mounted on roof air conditioner. I missed the main question. I have solar power feeding to rocker switches by the entry door but cannot find any solar power on any wire in the battery compartment. Is this normal? Could it power through the Freedom inverter?
  • I have seen small panels on top of roof A/C
No Controller, just a square block, blocking diode , between the wire from the panel an one of the chassis wiring terminals under the front hatch

OEM panels are always small, and those from many years ago are probably VERY small, under 50W total. There should still be a controller but for a small panel it will also be small, tiny black box few inches long hidden somewhere.

Panel less than 5W - size of a sheet of paper - might not have any controller.
  • It does not take much light to get a Voc of 17 from a solar panel, under load they should match the battery voltage.

Are the solar panels small? maintainer with no controller?
