No surprises. It's been said many times - in desert Southwest cover the whole darn roof with solar and leave generator home.

200-300W flat system would let you live off solar practically indefinitely, in winter, with "some" energy conservation. 500-600W would let you do this without much conservation. This area is made for winter living off solar.
