Okay, substitute "Load" for "Starter" The 'Load' is whatever it is you are sending power to, using the solenoid.
A solenoid is just a big relay. Uses a small amount of power to send large power. Think of it as a big light switch that gets flipped electrically (ie by a key, small switch, etc).
Make more sense?
