Spongy flooring in slide outs

Hi all,

My husband and I are happy (or so far at least) new owners of a park model, and we decided to purchase the property and travel trailer right next door to allow separate housing for friends and family that visit. Over the weekend, we realized that both slide outs have spongy flooring toward the wall. We will never pull the camper out until it's time to send her to trailer heaven, so we don't need anything to be slide in and outable.

I've been watching several utube videos about replacing the flooring and it looks rather daunting. Since we just want it to remain as a permanent structure, can't we just remove the damaged flooring and install some thick plywood to serve as a permanent floor in that area?

I'm not quite sure where to look for something like that -- as the majority of videos show actual removal of the slide out or getting underneath it. There is a preexisting wood skirting that surrounds the entire unit and I'd rather not destroy that trying to get underneath.

Please help! Thank you!!
  • You are correct, it's no easy job. I have never pulled one out and I wouldn't want to. THIS video is probably close to how I would think I would replace mine if needed. They are using 2x4 on the outer corners to support the whole thing while they remove the floor.

If you dont want to remove the lower skirting or get involved with much work about the only thing you can do is band aid it and remove the carpet and lay down a piece of plywood and re carpet it. If your slide is the type that is flush with the main floor then the additional wood is going to form a lip if that is a problem. If it doesn't smell and have mold showing inside I suppose you could then use it as is. There isn't much else to do unless you disassemble and repair it properly. Down the road if the walls are damaged just tear the whole thing off and frame up a new room and side it with something that works. It also may not be perfect but you can do it without it being half fanny. If allowed by the park maybe you could even make the area larger.

This is why water damage is a big deal and the number one issues with rv's.

Another one with the corners supported by 2x4.

X2. Just cut out the rot and replace the plywood. It should be a fairly simple project.
Congrats on your kitten caboodle. :)
  • thanks so much! We fully intend to get rid of the mold and to find out where the initial problem lies. We bought the whole kitten caboodle from my inlaws, and he says that at 'one point' there was a water issue but it's since been resolved. I just think that since they didn't take it one step further to see what may have been damaged, it's gotten to the point where it has to be replaced.

Still open and welcoming to more ideas, suggestions and advice!
  • Pull up the carpeting on the slide and you'll see what's going on there. Just sawzall out the old floor and put in new 3/4" plywood. You can then just built a supporting structure underneath. You do want to get the old rotton stuff out because the mold/rot will spread even if no more water is coming in.

Also remember that the floor is rotting because you have a leak somewhere, you should try to find where it's leaking and fix that too.
