Are you saying this knowing what a Sprinter oil filter is like? I can't imagine how one would dump it.

:S Forgot the dang things are upside down

You turn an oil filter upside down to drain the oil in it. Have you NEVER replaced an oil filter???? Doug

  • Find someone with a Pela 6000 vacuum oil pump. Oil needs to be hot. Pull dipstick, insert hose, pump to create a vacuum, suck out half a quart, call it done. Measure dipstick after sucking oil out to be sure you are not now on the lower range of oil in the oil pan.
  • Remove oil filter......dump it and then put it back on.

Start engine to refill oil filter......shut it down...wait 15 mins. for all oil to drain back into pan and check oil level.
  • IF the oil filter is easily accessible, I would pull it and drain it to get the extra 1/2 qt out. This is a common problem on Sprinter engines when unqualified Oil Changers do the oil changes. 1/2 qt OVER is all it takes to trip the hi level indicator. Doug
  • There are only 2 ways to get the oil out, through the plug in the pan or with one of the devices that sucks it out via the dipstick tube. The oil pan plug in my 2008 model is fairly small in diameter, enough to easily close off the hole with a finger tip. If you use a catch pan and pull the plug with the engine cold and don't do something unfortunate like drop the plug and have it roll away, I think the job can be done making a reasonably small mess. On further thinking I guess a 3rd way would be to remove the oil filter cap for access there. I don't know what the mess factor would be doing that.
  • Had an oil change before leaving.Probably the old half quart extra problem,,, Should I drain? Is there an easier way than opening the plug on the oil pan? Thanks
  • Have you recently had the oil changed?

    Have you recently added oil?

If no recent oil changes/no adding of oil.......I'd been wondering WHY it is high??....does the oil smell like diesel?
  • I seem to (vaguely) recall that the Sprinter operator manual says to drain to normal level immediately.
