Squealing Wheel

This morning when we left our campsite I was getting a squealing noise from one of my wheels. Thought maybe it was a brake issue, tried backing up and braking, but still doing it. Wheels turned okay so drove 160 miles to next campground and seemed normal driving but could notice some squealing pulling into campsite. Anyone have any idea what the problem could be ? Have tried to call several places to get it looked at, but still waiting for my calls to be returned. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Dave
  • Had problem fixed today. It was a brake spring that failed. Thank you everyone for your help, Dave
  • Looking at my manual, it looks like it has drum brakes. They are dexter axles with the nev-r-lube feature.

This is the one I'd bet on ... a safety warning, and not all pads wear exactly evenly, so one can get there sooner.

  • Only way to find out for sure is disassembly. Could be almost anything from bad bearing to broken spring to small pebble rubbing against the drum. Sorry to say you'll have to take it apart and find the issue. Not safe to do otherwise.
  • I'd suggest to jack the squealer up and investigate. You should be able to get a diagnosis by turning the drum in midair.
  • Once in a while parts will come loose inside the brake drum and will squeal until they are removed. I've seen part of the brake material (lining), springs, cables, magnets and other little parts loose when a brake drum is removed.

Or one of the shoes is hung up and scraping against the brake drum.

It needs to be taken care of before the damage puts you on the side of the road.
