It depends on the "filter".
Housing is s easy to wash and dry, there is nothing to it.
Cartridge is difficult to drain or dry, they absorb a lot of water and hold it for long time. Some cartridges can be cleaned, some you have to throw away because mold will grow in storage. Your cartridge manufacturer should have this info, you'll probably find it in the manual.
Putting it in the fridge will slow down bacterial growth but won't stop it completely. Freezer is probably better, though I didn't try this. Prefer replacing it after longterm storage.
