Strange AC cycling?

I have submitted a service request to Airxcel for this, but I am wondering if anyone has experienced this issue?

I have a 3 zone AC system. The AC on zone 1 does a strange cycling over and over.
Its starts up and has a high amp draw of about 45 to 48 amps for a brief second. Then it runs for about 10 minutes and shuts down before reaching the set temp. Then 5 seconds later it trys to start again but it fails, 10 seconds later its starts again and runs for 10 minutes. Then it repeats that whole cycle until the set temp is reached.

Ring any bells?

  • I burnt cap will not always smoke. If you are running that high of amps the breaker should be tripping. Are you saying it only runs that high for a split second or is it more than that? Caps are cheap so it's worth a shot but if a compressor is pulling that many amps it should trip your 20 amp.
  • The issue I am having is more about the failing to start. Its makes a noise that its trying to start and draws high amperage. Normally if a capacitor were out you would smell smoke. I dont think its a capacitor.
  • Have no idea other than a guess. Sounds like it is measuring the temperature from the return somewhere rather than room temperature. So temperature is "SATISIFIED" and shuts off. A short time later the fan starts to "measure" the temperature and it still satisfied so the compressor does not start and fan shuts off. I have an atwood 15,000 BTU that does same on heat pump. Love it on acnd but heat pump drives me crazy and will not get the room temperature up satisfactorily. Per atwood that's the way it was designed to work.
