Suburban F-35 furnace squeal....

Time to deal with this. It's been squealing for years, once it heats up. Sometimes not if it's cold enough outside (freezing). I generally get 10=15 min. of running time before the high-pitched constant squal kicks in. Someone told me a while back to oil it but I can't get to it without taking the whole thing out and I don't know how to do that. Can anyone link to something that explains how to do that, how involved that is? Or talk me through it? And should I perhaps just replace the whole, what is that -- motor and blowing assembly (that black cylinder shaped thing) since the rig is 14 years old anyway? Is there anything I can do that doesn't involve disconnecting gas lines etc...?

Thanks...

  • Forget about trying to oil, just replace the motor & be done with it. Not a bad idea to give it a good inspection while you have the furnace pulled. Be surprised what you might find!
  • Hire a Mobile Service Tech. It can be changed in 90 minutes or less.
  • yep, replace the fan motor. you are not the only one hearing it. My buddy's was squealing at the dunes and the whole campsite had to listen to it.
  • Like it been said couple of screws in front/side then it pulls out. Disconnect the paper thin ductwork But plan that you are going to punch a hole in it so have a plan "B." The hardest part is that the six or so wires likely aren't long enough to get the unit out and their won't be a connector on them. I cut mine and lengthened them using a butt connector then used spade connectors to join them just in case I needed to redo my handy work.

The worst part was laying on the beer belly trying not to roll away and finding out my arms are two inches too short.
  • Probably need to just replace the motor. The furnace is usually held down with screws at the corners. Disconnect the propane, electrical and vent then slide it out. Easy job on the workbench. Check the operation of the motor and blower on the bench to be sure about the source of the squeal. Good luck with the repair.
  • Just by chance it caught on the cross-bars. Looks like the end of a styrofoam squiggle. But black..charcoal.
  • Correct motors are permanently lubricated.....besides they don't have bearings just oiled bushings.

Charcoal ?? caught on exhaust vent grate.....that is a very dirty combustion chamber

Suburban Furnace........have to pull furnace to do repairs, make adjustments etc.

  • Camping World parts guy says it can't be oiled, have to replace the motor. Is the blower part of the motor? If it's a high pitched squeal does that mean it's the blower or the motor...or could it be either? It lasts until the whole things goes silent and I think the blower is what continues on even after the kill the furnace so my guess it's in the blow. Is it possible to replace just the blower?

Also...there was a tiny chunk of charcoal resting (caught) on the little crossbars where the furnace vents outside. About the size of a dime. That worried me a little. Is that normal?
