Suburban SW6DE Problem

Hi all. I am looking for some help diagnosing a problem with my suburban SW6DE water heater. It has worked fine for 12 years but now it won’t run on gas.

When I turn the switch to start the propane burner nothing happens - no light on the reset button, no ticking of the igniter, nothing. I have 12 volts at the switch, the thermostat hi limit switch is fine, and I even get 12 volts at the red wire going into the module board with the propane switch in the on position.

I don’t really know what to do from here, so any advice would be appreciated.

Darryl
  • Around the same age since new, I had to get a new on/off switch that goes by the red light--fixed the problem. Easy swap.
  • My hi limit switch looked good and even showed continuity thru the wire but it was no good.
  • 12 years, nothing lasts forever. Sounds like the ignitor board is done

12V DC on RED wire AT the circuit board means DC circuit is good thru on/off switch, thru set of t-stats BUT nothing from circuit board
With DC on RED wire at circuit bd then should be DC on BROWN Wire to Gas Valve Solenoids and energizing the spark electrode with high voltage.

Check the YELLOW Wire coming out of circuit bd..GROUND and needs to be connected for circuit bd to function
Good ground.then circuit bd is Bad

Thanks old biscuit. I will check the brown and yellow wires coming out of the circuit board after work tonight.

  • Update from the OP:

Based on the advice of Old-Biscuit, I checked for 12 volts at the brown wire on the module board. When there was no voltage there, I still suspected that there was something wrong with the module board, so I removed it and inspected it. There was obvious overheat damage to one of the circuits, so I ordered a new board on amazon.

    Thanks for the help.
