Surprised How Loud Our Coleman Mach AC is...

Hi All,

Inside our RV, the sound from the AC or HP is very reasonable, no complaints. However, I am really surprised how loud the units (we have one AC and one HP) are outside.

They are newer Coleman Mach units (new within the last year) and both are 15K.

Both sound like mini-jet engines outside....

Our previous Carrier and Dometic units were much quieter outside and a bit noiser inside. Anyone else experience this? Pretty sure it is normal as both units (AC anc HP) are about the same...

Any thoughts on ways to quiet them down....feel bad for our nieghbors...

Thanks
Dan
  • RV2Go, I think that's me next to you. Our A/C units are extremely loud! I'm going to check in to the Blade kit... Sorry it's so loud :)
  • Ours are a good bit quieter than our previous Dometic inside, just hoping to reduce the outside noise for our nieghbors....plan to check which fan they have today...

There is a fan upgrade available For the Coleman HP. The replacement fan is a computer designed three bladed "shamrock" type....very efficient..very quiet. I installed it today. There is a significant reduction in noise level inside and out.

IME, the noise comes from several bad designs in the HP. First the old fan is a crappy designed multi-blade air beater; the bonnet is a very flexible resin that vibrates sympathetically to the frequencies of the fan, compressor and airhandler like a drum head; the compressor's plumbing rubs/chatters/vibrates against the bonnet.

The fan kit has a brace for holding the bonnet away from plumbing. Good! It no longer sounds like a playing card in a bicycle spoke as the plumbing beats against the bonnet.

I applied aluminum faced butyl tape to the underside of bonnet for insulation & mass dampening. It has killed any resonance in the bonnet and dampens any noise. Works like a champ!

How quiet you ask????? With the generator running you almost can't hear the AC unit running... just a hummmmmmmmmm! On shore power it is quieter than a small vacuum cleaner...again a low hummmmmm. I think most of the noise is from the air being drawn through the condenser.

Got the kit from PPL RV Parts, Houston, TX. Ask for Dan the Parts Man...

The fan upgrade is not a warranty part. So, if you have a RVP(Coleman) under warranty and you have the jet engine sound, RVP will not replace the upper blade with the quiet kit under warranty. They just had the upgrade kit designed for those that do not like the noise. Doug

This is the P/N from Coleman. The Blade Kit is a 1472B5041

They must have changed something. Our older Mach 15k sounds like your typical RV rooftop. Not silent but not unusually loud. Inside, its two settings are Extremely Loud and Even Louder.

My Mach 3, 13.5 is the same way - super loud inside my trailer, and respectfully quiet outside.

All that noise inside the trailer does help with over-nighting at a rest area or truck stop, or a loud campground. it's so darn loud inside, you can't hear what's going on outside.

  • That is exactly how I would describe what our rooftop A/C sounds like. It is also a Coleman Mach unit, 13.5k. I think ours is pretty loud inside too, but it is definitely louder outside.

I have heard others in different campgrounds that sound the same, so I figured that was normal.

  • Strange that you post this. I may be parked beside you in Florida. There is a 5th wheel parked next to me that has 2 of the nosiest roof airs that I have ever heard. And with the heat we are having, they run almost all day.
