tail lights on magnetic tail lights

2008 Damon Essence on a Freightliner chassis. Magnetic lights for the toad. Brake lights and turn signals work fine on coach and mag lights. Tail lights work fine on the coach. However there is no tail lights on the magnetic lights. A couple of folks have told me it is because the lights on the coach were separate from the brake and turn signals. I am not sure what they were talking about. The parts store that I buy stuff from has all sorts of for tail/brake/turn signal lights. I have not found anything that looks like it would fix this.
The mag lights are plain old 4 wire common lights.
What do I need?

Agree. You probably need a 3 wire to 2 wire converter. Like this:

Get one of these 7 pin/4 pin testers. It will tell you if you are getting a signal from the tow vehicle. You can test the 7 pin connector, then plug the adapter in and test it.
  • On the MH, I have the big 7 pin round connector, into which is plugged a round 7 pin male that terminates with a 4 pin flat connecter. I will check on the color of the wire that connects to the rear of the big connector on the MH. Will also see how it works with my F-250.
  • I am guessing that you want the 'running lights' to light up on the magnetic lights on the towed vehicle? You can do that, and the brown wire should have +12 volts when the RV running lights are on.

On my RV, I found that I only had about 9 volts at the rear bumper, and I needed to tow my brother's trailer with it's own 16 running lights on it, in addition to the 16 or more running lights on my motorhome. This at first tripped the 20 amp fuse going to the headlamp switch, so I installed a relay that runs power from the 20 amp wire going to my water pump (it was handy and powerful enough) and the relay is energized fine by the 9 volts that is powering the RV running lights.

My guess is that your RV power out to the brake and turn signal lights is fine, however the 12 volt power to the running light is missing on the receptacle where the magnetic lights are plugged in. Right turn signal and brake light should be green, while left turn/brake should be yellow. Running light is normally brown. Ground is white. Sometimes if the white wire is broken, then none of the lights will work properly.

    Good luck!

First, plug the magnetic lights into another vehicle with a trailer connector to see if the tail lights work. If so, the problem is in your RV/connector. If not, the problem is in the lights. You can check the bulbs/wiring.

I bought magnetic lights at Harbor Freight 7 years ago that were miswired. I had to rewire them, but for $9.99, I didn't care. (On mine, the two filaments were wired backward. The dim filament was the turn signal/brake light and the bright filament was the tail light.)

  • My 05 FL has the round (7pin?) connector. I connect my mag lights to it via a round 7 to flat four wire adapter I got at Walmart or Harbor Freight.

    How are you connecting yours?
