Television Antenna Leak

After reading this original post, I contacted Winegard to ask about how to lubricate the quad ring. They assured me that spraying the areas, as noted in Chris Bryants post above, would lubricate the quad ring. Just in case, I also took off the hex nut and gave it a liberal dose of silicone spray.

The only loss with that setup is that it won't preform as well as a Batwing on Low VHF channels or with channels at a distance.

I replaced my winegard with a unit with less problems and builtin signal finder to boot!

Don't have to worry about putting it down or up either!

If you have a wedge, this is often a leak point as well and one I always forget to suggest. The base is screwed through the wedge and should be secure to the roof so all the other interior components are removable. There is an 11/16" nut way up the inside shaft near the roof that must be loosened and removed to remove the entire antenna assembly if that's what you are looking to do. This requires a special tool to access or can be made with a deep socket 11/16" and something to fee it up there. If you are sure that's where the leak is coming from you might just be as well off waiting for a few dry days and scraping and resealing all around the base, the wedge and the roof.

I removed the shaft today for a look. I don't believe it's my leak. I shone a light up through the hole inside and I can see where the water seem to be coming between the roof wedge and the rubber roof ( conveniently frozen in place ). Now my question is can I remove the gear housing from the base plate with the thing still attached to the roof? The co-ax boot looks fine and the shaft itself has no indication of being wet.

You do not need to do either. You just raise the antenna to about 45 degrees and spray the gears with the dry silicone. Doing this twice per year will keep the antenna cranking smoothly as well as keeping the o-rings in good shape.

Three areas to lube on winegard crank up antenna

With antenna in stowed position liberally spray with silicone the elevating gears....top part of housing that mast rises up with. Then crank antenna up/down.
This will also lube the worm gear.

On gear housing spray around the base and inside hole remove plug) then rotate antenna back & forth

As for the 'quad ring'....yes you have to remove the plastic nut and pull worm gear assemble up far enough to spray the washers, o-ring and shaft with silicone

These posts prompted me to look at my manual for my antenna. Man, Winegard really isn't too clear on how to lubricate the "quad ring". How do you do this? Do you remove the plastic hex nut on top and just drench it with silicone? Or, do you remove the shaft?
