That's what the problem was for sure. A 75 on a 170AH bank is a
44% charging rate, which is huge.
With the 170 AH bank at 12.0v (about 35-40% SOC) as soon as the 75 amps is applied there will be a big spike in battery voltage (as seen at the WFCO) to over 13.2v, so the WFCO will stay at 13.6
A 35 on 170 is a 20% charging rate which is still a goodly rate, but if the bank is at 12v, it just might keep that spike under 13.2 so the WFCO would kick in at 14.4
That is with short fat wires converter-battery of course. If long thin wires you get more R and that spike gets higher as seen at the WFCO, so above 13.2, and no 14.4.
