Thetford Style II

We have a Thetford Style II toilet; this has a lever on the right side of the toilet that you step on to flush. Sometimes, that arm is slow to return back upward; when this happens, the water valve and the flush valve are slow to close. Once the arm returns upward, the water valve and the flush valve close properly. There is no leak from either the water valve or the flush valve.

I have sprayed the flush valve with silicon spray several times. This only temporarily solves the problem.

Can anyone tell me if the problem is likely a problem with the flush valve seal, or some problem with the water valve, or something else?

  • Thanks for all comments and ideas.

I want to repair the toilet we have. It has worked very reliably for 4 1/2 years with a lot of use and now there must be a part or parts that is worn out, or not adjusted properly, or that needs to be lubed. Surely the symptoms my toilet has are not unique.

Does anyone have additional repair suggestions?
  • Per Thetford:

) Harder than normal pedal or hand lever operation:
Apply light film of Thetford Toilet Seal Lubricant & Conditioner or silicone spray to blade/ball.
(Note: To avoid damage do not use spray lubricants other than silicone.

I have cleaned the seal/ball lubed it with plumbers grease and foot pedal still would hang up.

Finally disassembled foot pedal and cleaned/lubed 'waste ball drive arm' (#10) and the 'slot' it fits into on toilet/
Re-assembled (PITA due to large spring in foot pedal) and it slammed shut for about a month (Full Timers use...!!)

    Then started hanging up again.

Next destination..........RV Store and new Dometic 320 w/sprayer

  • I also have the Thetford, and it is a POS (pun intended). I spoke with the Thetford people at the GS Rally in Phoenix, and they assured me it was working properly. Just use their expensive rubber seal lube and all would be great. Wrong! I'm having the same problem as RVhiker, and nothing I do seems to work for more than a few flushes.

Please tell me more about the Dometic 320, as I'm ready to throw the Thetford away.
  • There you go. replace the spring or the whole unit. I have a Thetford and if it is just a minor item not costing much I'll repair it but to be honest it isn't the most quality toilet. Mine is only a couple of years old and has been a PITA.
  • On my Aquamagic there is a return spring for the foot lever and mechanical arms. Mine was rusty so I disassembled it, cleaned, and lubricated all the parts.

At one time, someone had replaced the spring with a thicker spring that made flushing and the return too extreme. I replaced the spring. It works like new, now.
